My son has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.  I have lost of questions.

He has been to Dr's and has not started treatment yet.  He was told he would need Chemo and Radiation,  then the Surgeon told him he would need surgery to remove the esophagus and part of the stomach after that.  Now Martin wonders why he should have chemo and radiation why not just have surgery.  What do you think?

Martin is 48 and has a wife and 3 children under 8.

What can anyone  tell me about cancer of the esophagus?  Martin's cancer is at the base of the esophagus but not in the stomach.  He is just starting chemo and radiation that will go on for the next 6 weeks.  Do you know what the chance's are that he will need surgery?   Do you know of anyone who has had this type of cancer.   Thanks for any info you can give me.  'Emkody'

For information regarding cancer of the esophagus (or in your case - probably the GE junction), please contact Shelley Stoker.  She is the Clinical Care Specialist for the Huntsman GI Cancer Program.  Shelley will be able to answer all of your questions, and also works closely with the nurses (if you'd like to ask them questions), as well as the Doctors (cancer doctors that specialize in GI cancers: surgeons, med/onc, rad/onc, GI, etc.).  Shelley can also help you track down some patient education materials. Her number is 801-587-4422.
